Earlier this year, we placed some new camera nest box kits above our workshop. Within a few days, several interested Great tits and Blue tits were investigating their new nest boxes.
After a few viewings, a pair of Great tits were happy with their home and decided to stay and build a nest.
16th April 2007 - 11.21 AM Mrs G Tit arrives and takes no time arranging the furniture. She uses her wings to spread out, measure up and pops out to get some more moss. Mr G Tit is heard communicating to her as well as protecting their new found home. How amazing.
17th April 2007 - 1.45 PM Mrs G Tit has been really busy building her nest. She has made a bed of moss and hair. This is a good idea to leave moss and hair around the nest box, so they are encouraged to create a nest.
20th April 2007 - 5.50 PM Mrs G tit has finally settled in her nest. This looks like a normal procedure and must be hard work flying in and out with nesting material.
26th April 2007 - 11.31 PM Wow....Five new surprises have arrived. She has certainly busy and stunning how a small bird can lay so many eggs. They must be content with their new home.
27th April 2007 - 1.35 PM Our new mum is now resting and tending to her new additions. Mr G Tit is doing his bit by bringing in food after a few calls. How amazing is this?
29th April 2007 - 2.15 PM Mrs G Tit and Mr G Tit start to relax and recover after a busy few days. They will start to eat a lot more ready for the busy time to come. Mrs G Tit is clearly getting herself comfortable while keeping her eggs warm.
9th May 2007 - 8.15 AM Today.....is an amazing day, The eggs started hatching. Four eggs hatched in succession. Clearly Mrs G Tit was interested in what was happening, Amazing,,,,,
10th May 2007 - 8.25 AM Wow, it has been a busy night. All the eggs have hatched, the shells have been removed and the chicks are getting more hungry,,,,
12th May 2007 - 1.21 PM The chicks are really getting comfortable and even try a spot of crowd surfing. It is amazing how they struggle to get to the right position at the top.
14th May 2007 - 3.05 PM Often not seen is how birds cope with faeces, This shows the chick turing upside down and Mrs G Tit taking the small white parcel away. Often the parents swallow the parcel.
Somehow the birds instinctively know to get rid of any mess.
15th May 2007 - 2.28 PM After a good knap, there are a few hungry mouths to feed. Mr and Mrs G Tit get their attention by chirping although, no encouragement was needed.
25th May 2007 - 3.18 PM The chicks are noticibly getting bigger. Although, there seems to be one chick (at the front) which is slighly under developed. Often they develop at different times. We hope he pulls through.
25th May 2007 - 5.40 PM Warning, please do not look if upset easily.
A sad day today. One of the chicks dies. We were very upset how nature can be ruthless. The small chick which we have been keeping an eye on, sadly dies.
They often say that the fittest survive. But, this is hard to understand as they were all fed really well and growing fast. The birds seem to be oblivious of the tragedy. It is still unclear why it died.
We were unsure whether to show this, but thought it was important to highlight the cold realities of nature. It is a sad sad day.
27th May 2007 - 11.25 AM After a sad event a couple of days ago, the chicks are really growing and eating nicely. Mr and Mrs G Tit are busier than ever.
29th May 2007 - 10.45 AM The chicks are more like birds now. The nest box looks perfect for them to keep warm together. They seem to be chirping to each other. In fact, they are beginning to explore life outside their home by standing up and peering out the whole.
29th May 2007 - 7.45 PM G TIT FAMILY - ALL GONE! After over a month of filming Mr and Mrs G Tit, they have decided that it is time for them to fly the nest. Unfortunately, we did not get any action of the first flight. But, it is great news that we have helped raise and witness this wonderful and hidden natural world. We managed to see Mr and Mrs G Tit through stages of raising their brood.
Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Hopefully, we will get some more in our other boxes.
If you have had success, please send us your footage and we will share it with others.
