Spot the first signs of spring

Who does it and what do they have to do?
Well, you and me. Volunteers are needed to make a note of the first appearance of the following

  • First frog spawn
  • First seven spotted ladybird
  • First red-tailed bumble bee
  • First peacock butterfly
  • First hawthorn flowering
  • First swift

If you would like more information about the species click here .

What happens to all the results?

All the information is added to one central database of over 300 years of observations and knowledge. Over the past few years there has been a slight rise in temperature, bringing our Spring earlier and earlier. The statistics are a good way of monitoring species numbers and for monitoring climate change over the years.

The BBC program

Springwatch is a series of daily live shows on BBC2, at the end of May, showing the wonders of Spring and the excitement and delight it brings. The program is presented by Bill Oddie and Kate Humble and features fantastic Handykam type footage of birds in nest boxes. The series goes from strength to strength, using technology to understand, monitor and enjoy wildlife. Definitely, a must for all bird-lovers .
