Love your birds - National bird box week 2007 Every year, around Valentines Day (February 14th ), National Nestbox week is launched. The idea was developed by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) in 1997 to help conserve, protect and monitor garden birds. Over recent years, they have found that a number of species of garden birds, including house sparrows and starlings, have declined quite dramatically. Now you can help.
Why do we need bird boxes?
Sadly, many of the natural nesting sites are disappearing as houses are renovated, energy conservation leads to the sealing of buildings, and even gardens get cleared up. By putting up a nestbox, you are not only helping garden birds, you can enjoy them too. It is an absolute delight to get nesting robins, blue tits, great tits, fly catchers, coal tits, wrens, sparrows and other familiar and not-so-familiar birds. There is nothing more exciting than seeing and knowing that you have helped our national birds succeed in an ever more challenging environment. |
BBC get involved too
This year the BBC is working closely with the BTO and have created the ‘Nest box challenge' as part of the ‘BBC breathing spaces' campaign. The idea is to erect a nestbox and monitor the occupants through the breeding season. All you have to do is erect your bird box, register with the BTO website and log your birds as you see them. You will play a vital role in collecting valuable data about Britain 's birds. The more we can understand about our breeding birds, the better.
| Why not monitor them in more detail?
Once you have erected your nestbox, it is best to leave it alone and not disturb your feathered neighbours while monitoring them from a distance. Better still, monitor, learn and enjoy them with a Handykam nest box camera . Like many others, you will be able to see them prospect the box, argue over ownership, make a nest, lay their eggs and rear their chicks – and they will be blissfully unaware of your watching every intimate, secret moment. It is fascinating world and a must for any bird loving family. Lots of customers “complain” that it is positively addictive. It is exciting, helps the BTO/Nest box challenge survey, and helps to conserve our local birds for many years to come. |
