Finding USB 2 on your computer Some camera devices require a USB 2 port on the back of your computer. Most computers have a USB port, but how do you know if it is USB 2 or not? They are not marked on the outside of the computer and may not be in your manual. Here is a quick answer to this question. What is this? USB is short for Universal Serial Bus, which is a "plug and play" slot on the back of your computer allowing you to connect add-on devices. With USB, a device can be added to your computer without having to turn the computer off. From 2001 USB 2 came onto the market, looking exactly the same as a USB 1 port but 40 times faster. Most computers after 2001 have USB2 fitted which also allows USB1 devices to work too. . | Step 1 |
 Step 1A
| So how do you know if you have USB 1 or 2?
Step 1 Firstly right click on my computer on your desktop.
Step 1a If you cannot see it, click the start button and right click on my computer. A menu should appear. Go to bottom of menu and click properties. . |
Step 2 The system properties should appear. This is where the information about your computer is kept. You will see the speed and configuration of your computer here. Click on the hardware tab at the top. . | Step 2 |
 Step 3
| Step 3 Click the device manager button, |
Step 4 Scroll down to bottom and click on the plus sign next to universal serial bus controllers. There are a few of them, so click on all the plus signs. If any say ‘USB2’ or ‘Enhanced' then USB2 is working. If not, then it is probably USB1
When you plug in a device that is for USB1 or 2, the computer should recognise the device straight away. If you try a device and it still doesn't work on a computer that says it is a USB2, try another USB port as there are usually a few.Otherwise, it may be a software installation problem.
