Live Cornish Chough web cam

Earlier this year, we were approached by Paradise Park with an enquiry about cameras for their Operation Chough Project. We could hardly be more interested. Paradise Park is our important local wildlife sanctuary, home of the World Parrot Trust and their Operation Chough Project is close to the heart and soul of everyone here in Cornwall.

The Chough (pronounced “chuff”) (pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) is one of the primary emblems on Cornwall’s coat of arms, with roots that go deep in Cornish history and folklore. It is a handsome, glossy black bird with a long, curved red bill and red legs who tumbles and dances in the high winds around cliff faces and mountains tops, where its distinctive call seems to echo its sheer joy of flying in the wildest of weathers.

Huge Chough decline

Sadly, this important bird went into decline and eventually vanished from Cornwall in the 1970’s, due to the changes in modern agriculture that denied the chough sufficient rough grassland full of bugs and leatherjackets on which it relies, and no doubt predation by egg collectors as it became ever more rare.

Paradise Park decided to do something about it and now the team, led by Ray Hayes, are raising choughs for eventual release, using secluded, natural aviaries and an innovative wild food system. You and the kids can get involved by becoming valued bug hunters., a resource so vital to the successful raising of chicks.

With cameras in several nest boxes, linked to a central monitoring station, the team at Operation Chough are now able to monitor and record every event in the important breeding season, adding to the critical knowledge about these fascinating birds. And that’s not all - they have another real first, too - a LIVE WEBCAM , where you can watch events in the chough nest boxes, from eggs to fledging, live, as they unfold.

Over the years, Ray and team have developed a unique way of helping the new chicks have the greatest chance of surviving through the crucial early days. The idea is to feed them natural organic food to help them grow quickly and healthily.

Please help the chicks by collecting them in the wanted list and sending them to the park. Read below or download list (PDF)
