What is it?
IP is short for Internet Protocol. When video is captured, it is send to the viewing device via a digital signal rather than a video/audio signal with dependency on voltage. The mechanism of capturing images is similar, but the big difference is the image can be compressed and viewed on any device anywhere on the same network. But, don’t worry, in order to use IP, you don’t have to be a boffin.

Yes, but what is IP?
IP is a protocol. This is a set of rules on how the data is moved across the network and how it is viewed. Apparently, there are over 8,000 protocols out there. IP is a principle communications protocol. It allows data to be split up and send to the right destination and back again easily and efficiently. It is this flexibility of communication makes image transfer very easy.

Why IP cameras?
IP cameras were first brought to light in 1996 by Axis with their Neteye 2000. Since then, the technology has improved year on year as people and the cost of production has reduced. IP cameras use thetechnology of packet switching. This is where the data is broken up into chunks or packets and travel to the destination independently and the re-glued together at the other end. This means, that a constant open circuit or signal does not have to be open or suffer loss. IP cameras are more successful as they offer higher resolution, more flexibility for recording and viewing anywhere in the world.

IP addresses
Like your home address, every device and computer connected to a network will have a unique number or IP address. Usually this is a set block of four numbers ie When you put a memorable web address into your favourite search engine, the web address is linked to an IP address. The domain name is easier to remember than a set of numbers. IP cameras use this structure connect and transmit the data from the camera to the viewer.

The big question – Digital or analogue

This is the million dollar question. If price is not an issue, we would recommend going for IP as the quality is far superior and this is future for camera technology.

Pros for digital IP

  • Flexible viewing – The cameras can be viewed anywhere on most devices without special conversion
  • Fairly future proof – Once you have the cables in place, you can easily upgrade the cameras in the future
  • Infrastructure in place – No limit on camera quality

Pros for analogue

  • Price – Analogue systems are relatively cheaper than digital IP
  • Installation – Pro installers are charging less for installation and more can install these.

Hope this helps

How do I focus the camera?
You focus the camera by simply turning the lens like a camera lens. If it does not move, it may have a small grub screw securing the lens to the camera. This can be undone by using a small star screwdriver.

Will it fit in my bird box?
The camera is really small and can be used in most boxes. See specs for details. The main things to check if the camera can fit and the correct lens can view enough of the area.

Is it compatible with my cable?
We would always recommend using our cables as they have been tested and work well with our cameras. This depends on your cable. Most composite cables are ok as they carry power (12v) to the camera and send video and audio back down the same cable. The connectors are standard RCA jacks and the power socket is 5.5mm outer 2.1mm inner.

This is a wired camera, do you have wireless one?
All cameras tend to be wired, but then get converted by using a separate transmitter.

Can I use my own power supply?
We would always recommend using our power supplies as they are built to the latest standards and specifications. Power supplies come in various voltages and amperages. It is always important to use the correct power supply.

Can you see the LED’s, will they effect the birds?
The camera produces a very dull glow. It is hard for you to see and possess no threat to birds and animals.

What do I do with the cable and connectors?
When the connectors are fitted to the camera, ideally they should be either under cover or placed in conduit to protect from elements. Failing all this, you can get one of our camera nest boxes as they come with a camera mount.

Can you turn off the audio?
There is no button as such for this. The only way to do this is to disconnect this from the white connected either at the camera or viewing end.

Can I connect the camera to a computer?
The camera is AV or TV ready. In order to connect to a computer or network (tablet, phone). You can either use a:

  • USB device to digitise the signal into a computer
  • IP convertor – This converts the signal into a digital signal by connecting the camera to your router. Any device in your network will be able to see and use the camera.
  • Steaming box – This device digitises the signal and it allows the camera to be seen anywhere in the world
